Mr Men = Spongebob

Yesterday, I decided to get a Happy Meal from McDonald's. I haven't had one since I was a kid.

Why did I get one? It's offering Mr Men as the toy. I grew up with the Mr Men series, so it's a nostalgic thing.

Well, I specified the Mr Men Happy Meal. What did I get? Spongebob. Ugh!

Apparently, Mr Men all got a facelift and became Spongebob. I will try again soon and hope that the folks at my local McD's get my order correct!

My childhood friend has COVID-19

Two days ago, I found out that a friend whom I've known since we were both four years old, has COVID-19. Ugh!

She works as a manager at a liquor store, which remains open through this pandemic. She lost her sense of taste and smell last Monday. She got a test done and it came back positive.

She describes having it as if I truck had run over her. She is at home, resting and self-isolating. Her daughter is a newly minted nurse. It must be highly stressful for both of them.

My friend is upbeat under the circumstances. She is achy and tired, though. She also doesn't wish this virus on her worst enemy.

It's scary that certain provinces here want to relax certain policies. On Saturday, Ontario was allowed to have nurseries and garden centres open. All I saw were lineups of folks. As much as I am all for having a distraction and a gardening hobby, I simply hope that there are measures in place at these centres as there are at grocery stores. The last thing we want is another spike in the number of Canadians with COVID-19.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone. This virus is scary.

Snow tires and 60's music

It's the middle of May. I finally got my snow tires off.

This past winter was the first time that I got snow tires. I have lived in Minnesota and Manitoba for nearly nine years when you total everything. I don't know why I waited that long to get them, but they were great during all the snow and ice that we got here.

I have my tires stored at the dealership. I had originally wanted my tires changed last week, but there wasn't enough time to get them out of storage. So, it happened on Wednesday.

I seem to be able to strike up a conversation or have some sort of common bond with drivers shuttling me between the service centre and my home. Getting a ride home consisted of my humming to 60's music with my driver. He was enthusiastically tapping his hand to the beat. He was great in using is GPS to get me home.
"It's my first time not providing directions to get me home. Instead, I got to listen to 60's music," I remarked.
"You seem young to know 60's music," he noted.
"I grew up listening to that era. It was my mom and dad's decade, so I had no choice but to listen to it. Today was like reliving my childhood, but not my decade of music," I replied.
He smiled. I thanked him for making my day.

Reliving Nintendo handheld gaming systems and never wanting to grow up

When I was in grade 12, just before my December exams, I saved up enough money to buy my first handheld gaming system. I got a Game Boy.

The store that I purchased my monochrome Game Boy was Consumers Distributing. It was essentially a catalogue service. You'd mark the items that you wanted on a piece of paper, and you'd then hand it to staff who would go into the warehouse to find your item. This store has since disappeared, as has the original Game Boy.

Here is a page from a Consumers Distributing flyer that likely caught my eye back then:

By the way, I also purchased the rechargeable AC adapter later months later.

Well over a decade later, I decided to get another Nintendo handheld gaming system. I went with the Game Boy Advance SP. I purchased mine in grey. The screen was colour! You could fold the system in half.

On the weekend, I went to Shoppers Drug Mart to get a few things. I was mainly there to buy a jar of peanut butter. The Nintendo 2DS was on sale for $100. I had $170 worth of points to spend at the store. I decided to ask whether there were any systems left.

The nice man working there said that he'd check in the warehouse. It reminded me of being at Consumers Distributing as a teenager. He asked me what colours I would like. I said blue. Otherwise, any colour would do just fine.

Five minutes later, he came back with the sea green colour, which is also white. I was pleased. It looked nice. I was sold. There is nothing like a few gaming system.

I am like a little kid sometimes. I went to Best Buy to browse games afterwards. I found a used one that was half price. It was Tetris, which is reminiscent of the first game that came with my Game Boy. I bought it.

Naturally, after my purchase, I went back to my car, opened the Tetris box, took out the cartridge, opened my Nintendo 2DS box, powered the device on (it had a full charge!), placed the Tetris game into the slot, and played the game for an hour. Yes, I played a game in my car on a rainy afternoon.

Although many would say that I am mature for my age, it's nice to not act my age on the weekend. It's nice to relive how I felt about playing an arcade game. It's exciting. It's challenging. It sparks my sense of wonder and fun. It makes me happy.

It will be interesting to tell my guy about my purchase. We are similar when it comes to games. We like puzzle and word games more than anything, but we both love pac-man.

No wonder we get along well.

M is for moo

I could have written about today being a significant milestone for me. I have blogged thirteen days in a row, something that I haven't done in years. I am nearly midway through this challenge.

Instead, I have chosen moo as my topic. Yes, I do mean the sound that a cow makes.

Years ago, I went to The Ex, which is short for the Canadian National Exhibition. It runs every year from August till early September. It's a fair, where you can go on rides, stuff your face with all sorts of food, shop, and see the air show during the Labour Day long weekend.

My parents used to take me there as a little girl. I ended up working there for three summers as a late teenager and towards the end of my undergraduate years.

Anyway, I ended up playing one of the games there and wound up winning a mini purple cow. I could have played more to trade up for a much larger plush toy, but I liked this cow. It was in my favourite colour. I had also never owned a stuffed cow toy.

Last week, my guy returned from Croatia. He got me a couple of gifts. One gift consisted of traditional cookies from the country, which are not too sweet. They are perfect.

The second gift? Milka chocolates with a mini stuffed purple cow. I got the rectangular gift bag like the one in this picture:

Coincidence? My guy doesn't know the story of my owning a purple plush cow. Now, I have two, to keep each other company.

He does know me well. I don't refuse chocolate. I also love anything purple. He is thoughtful that way.

So, that's it for my moo-ving post. Here's to being halfway through this udderly sweet challenge.http://theex.com/
