Life has its ups and downs

Life works in mysterious, wonderful ways. With sadness comes a silver lining.

I found out yesterday that my junior kindergarten teacher had passed away recently. She was musical. I remember singing in her class all the time and I loved it. It's likely one reason why I love music.

I posted her obituary on a social medium platform. A friend of mine revealed that we were likely in the same junior kindergarten class, but didn't know it. It's crazy to think that we have known each other since we were four years old! We forged a friendship in high school She switched elementary schools. Yet, we still have memories of truly knowing each other as four-year-old kids, but didn't make the connection until now.

Perhaps it's just a sign that our teacher's passing has sparked a new perspective on our friendship. Pretty cool!

Art, students, and learning

Things are good, but busy. My guy and I continue to chat on Skype while he is away on business, which makes us less miserable while we are apart.

Today's post is different. Since early May, I have been working closely with two co-op students. I have trained them and guided them through a number of work tasks.

Perhaps I am in the wrong field. Part of me is thinking that I should have become a teacher. Instead, I drifted from being a mathematician, to a computer scientist, to a writer.

It's funny how things happen. I have no regrets about being a writer. I enjoy it. I also get to explain in writing how to do tasks, which benefits the reader.

I have been told that I am a good teacher by my last two student interns. It's a nice feeling.

This internship is the first one that I have supervised in which we have two interns. It has been wonderful seeing their progress and how they have become stronger writers.

One impressed me so much that I decided to nominate her for an intern award. She finally got the word last Friday. She wrote a lovely, heartfelt e-mail to me. It is one of those e-mails that you want to print out and never delete.

The other intern showed how giving she is. She had a number of tickets to various tourist sites. However, she couldn't go. She offered them to me. This past Tuesday, I decided to book the day off and go to an art exhibit that I have wanted to attend for a while.

I was thankful that she asked me if I wanted to go. Although it would have been nice if she had the opportunity to go to the museum and see all the art exhibits, I bought her a book showing all the beautiful artifacts that I had experienced. The book also came with a DVD. She was elated.

It's nice to make the day of folks that you work closely with. They have also taught me so much in return. The learning experience has been enriching for all of us.

Spelling and grammar mistakes? That's a paddlin'!

I write for a living. I ended up in this profession by accident. I have no regrets. It has been a wonderful accident.

Yesterday, I came across this lovely photo on a Facebook page. It triggered a memory from my childhood.

In grades 1 and 2, I had the same homeroom teacher. In grade 2, towards the end of the school year, she gave us what seemed to be the mother of all spelling tests. What she said to us a day or two before the test day was the following:
"If you make three mistakes or more, you know what you'll get? The smacks."
Now, it sounds like I am ancient. I don't think that I am. However, if a teacher said that these days, it wouldn't been acceptable.

This teacher was special. I probably have mentioned that she was the one who spanked me lightly for finishing my math exercises faster than she had expected. She then hugged me after she was done patting my backside. Perhaps that is one reason why I like being hugged and cuddled after being spanked these days.

Anyway, I did make more than three mistakes on my spelling test back in grade 2. I had secretly hoped to get my fair share of smacks, but that never happened. However, it would be a perfect role-playing scenario to act out with my guy. Making grammatical errors would also be perfect for my backside to be paddled, too.
